About

I love ceramics for its endless capacity for discovery and experimentation. I find it a very welcome and generous medium - both the people that do it, and the ease with which you can start to express ideas with clay. Yet there’s so much depth to its alchemy, so much to learn and play with.

I like to keep my work local and low-impact if I can, by using nearby materials: wild clay, discarded glass from Victorian bottle dumps, sourdough starter in place of glaze. It’s a way of exploring the landscape and the stories that exist within it, whilst also being mindful of provenance and environmental impact.

Most of my work is made using a potter’s wheel but I enjoy the playfulness of handbuilding. This was really my first love with ceramics, when I needed a pressure valve from a serious office job. Now I love providing that space for other people, to be in a small group, learn new skills, explore creativity and meet people. Sometimes I weave/ draw/ paint so you might sometimes see prints in the shop too.

I am a member of Brier Hey Pottery in Mytholmroyd where I run a pottery club for local children. I was delighted to teach in a local high school and run public workshops for Hebden Bridge Arts in 2024.

I’m a co-founder of the Turquoise Arts Community Interest Company, and ran the Ancient Underlands arts programme in Autumn/ Winter 2024/5 to draw attention to local ancient grasslands and our rare fungi.

I’m a big fan of people being able to use community assets so I’m a trustee at the Station Building, Mytholmroyd, which will be opened as community/ arts space and art studios in 2025.
